I mostly work on environmental chemistry and microbiology. In our lab, we conduct research that focuses on evaluating pollution in water and soil environments and we quantify health risks associated with these contaminants. We also work on the development of technologies aimed at controlling pollution in water and soil using environmental microbiology, chemistry and biotechnology tools.

- Metagenomic analysis of antibiotic resistance, heavy metal resistance, aromatic hydrocarbon degradation, and dehalogenation genes in microbial communities living in contaminated river water
Duration: 24 months
PR.6.2015.2606
The Bogotá River receives untreated domestic and industrial wastewater from the Bogotá River Basin, where over 7 million people live. It also receives runoff from flower crops, which carries high loads of pesticides. As a result, the river contains high concentrations of various contaminants, including heavy metals and nutrients (CAR 2009), and very likely pesticides, volatile organic compounds, and antibiotics, yet to our knowledge, there are no prior studies aimed at evaluating such substances in the river. In the environment, microorganisms are capable of adapting to the presence of contaminants (Hemme et al. 2010; Manickam et al. 2010; Zhou et al. 2011; Baker et al. 2012) through processes such as positive selection, gene duplication, and lateral gene transfer. Metagenomic studies aimed at evaluating the adaptation of microbial communities to contamination have found abundance of nitrite/nitrate antiporters under nitrate stress; several possibilities for acid resistance response under pH stress;pathways for the degradation of 1,2-dichloroethene, acetone, and detoxification of formaldehyde under organic solvent stress; and metabolic mechanisms for resistance to mercury, uranium, chromium, and zinc, among other heavy metals, under heavy metal stress.Due to the high degree of contamination of the Bogotá River, it is expected that the relative abundance of genes involved in the degradation of contaminants, heavy metal resistance, and antibiotic resistance, is higher in water from the river than in many other ecosystems. The objective of this work was to evaluate a metagenome from water samples collected from the Bogotá River to investigate the abundance of genes conferring antibiotic resistance, heavy metal resistance, aromatic compound degradation, and dehalogenation capability in the metagenome. We compared the relative abundance of these genes in water samples from the river, with the relative abundance of the same groups in other ecosystems, including a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), acid mine drainage, gut metagenomes, andcontaminated soil samples, using metagenomics data available in the literature.
