Dr. Reyes is currently full professor and director of the Ressearch Center on Materials and Civil Infrastructure CIMOC of Universidad de los Andes. Between 2013 and 2022, he was the director of the integrated laboratory of civil and environmental engineering. He obtained his Civil Engineering degree from Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) in 1998 and his Master of Science degree in Structural and Earthquake Engineering from Universidad de los Andes in 2002. In 2009, he completed his doctorate studies at University of California, Berkeley. He performed doctoral research with Professor Anil K. Chopra on estimating seismic demands for performance-based engineering of buildings. He has received many awards including Summa Cum Laude bachelor degree, Undergraduate Laureate Thesis, Master Degree with Honors, Fulbright scholarship, 2019 Teaching Distinction, 2018 Best Paper Award (given by an ASCE journal), participant in the 2020 Diodoro Sanchez Award, 2023 Outstanding Researcher, 2024 Alberto Sarria Award and participant in 2025 Codazzi Award. In 2011, he was a Scientist Visitor at the United States Geological Survey in Menlo Park; CA. Dr. Reyes’s main areas of expertise are structural and earthquake engineering. He has published more than 200 research papers in technical journals, conference proceedings, books’ chapters, and keynote presentations. He has delivered more than 60 keynotes on Structural and Earthquake Engineering. He has participated in more than 60 research and consulting projects at national and international level. He is member of various professional associations including the Colombian Earthquake Engineering Association (AIS), the Colombian Association of Structural Engineers (ACIES), the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and the Colombian Institute of Steel Construction (ICCA). Currently, he is the director of design loads sub-committee of AIS. Among his contributions to standards writing, it is important to highlight his participation in the writing committee of document AIS610-EP-17 (regulated in Colombia by Decree 2113 of 2019), as well as his participation in the working groups of the design load for bridges and the design maps for wind forces in Colombia. As part of the AIS600 committee, Dr. Reyes received the 2020 Diodoro Sanchez Prize for his participation in the writing of the AIS610-EP-17 document. Between 2022 and 2024, he led, in collaboration with other institutions, the development of the National Seismic Risk Model, which was awarded the Codazzi Prize in 2025. This achievement reflects his outstanding technical and academic leadership, as well as his commitment to the country’s development and safety.
