Dr. Correal is Full Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia). He holds a Civil Engineering degree and a Master’s degree from Universidad de los Andes, and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering (with emphasis on bridges) from the University of Nevada, Reno (USA). He has more than 26 years of experience in structural engineering research, seismic-resistant design, and applied consulting. He has held key academic leadership positions, including Director of the Integrated Laboratory (2006–2013) and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2013–2017). Through the Center for Research in Materials and Civil Works (CIMOC), he has led numerous research and high-impact consulting projects for public and private institutions, focusing on structural behavior, construction materials, and seismic performance of infrastructure. Dr. Correal has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed and technical publications and has supervised over 180 undergraduate and graduate theses, contributing significantly to the education and development of structural engineers and researchers in Latin America. He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California (USA). He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and a voting member of ACI Committees 318-OD, 318-OL, 318-OS, and 374. He received the ACI Design Award (2018) and the Outstanding Journal Paper Award (2020) from the ASCE Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and serves on ISO/TC 165 G12, contributing to the modernization of international standards for the structural use of bamboo. He served as President of the Colombian Association for Earthquake Engineering (AIS) and the Colombian Association of Structural Engineering (ACIES). For ten consecutive years, he was a member of the Permanent Advisory Commission for the Seismic-Resistant Construction Code of the Republic of Colombia, actively contributing to the development and revision of national structural design standards, including AIS 180, AIS 114, and the Colombian Bridge Design Code (CCP-14).
